OUR PROGRAMS

SWE SPEAKS

SWE Speaks invites inspiring speakers from industry and academia to discuss their career paths and showcase their stories. Events are held virtually on weeknight evenings to allow engineering professionals to connect and engage in meaningful conversations. If you’d like to contribute, consider donating a venue or speaking for us!

COFFEE CLUB

Coffee Club is a safe space for women and allies of all career levels to build their support network by discussing personal and professional challenges in the industry. Every Coffee Club meetup is centered on a different discussion topic or article of interest. Coffee Club will be in-person this year, held at a Toronto-based cafe. Dates, location, and details to come

SWE SOCIALS

SWE Socials bring together engineering professionals in informal settings. As part of these events, we organize leisure activities such as movie meet ups, restaurant evenings, group hikes, and other family-friendly events that allow women in engineering and fellow allies to relax and enjoy themselves!

National Engineering Months

Every year in March, SWE Toronto holds an annual event partnering with Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) to celebrate National Engineering Month (NEM). This panel discussion event showcases inspiring leaders and professionals in STEM and supporting fields, their career paths, and stories. In 2022, SWE To NEM event topic was “Turning Career Adversity to Career Success” hosting 10 panelists. This event focused on having an open conversation around adversity, acknowledging its everpresense, and learning how to overcome it, with a special focus on the unique challenges faced by women and people from underrepresented groups within engineering and STEM.  To enable attendees to feel empowered in their own careers, we dived deep into 5 topics: Entering the Workforce, Parenting and Parental Leave, Choosing Grad School, Doer to Manager, and Self-Management. For each topic, two panelists described their experiences overcoming adversity and reaching success in their careers, in relation to the topic.

International Women in Engineering Day (INWED)

Every year on June 23, SWE Toronto celebrates International Women in Engineering Day by inviting inspiring professional women and allies to share their career stories, challenges and opportunities. For INWED 2022, SWE Toronto was sponsored by University of Toronto Rotman School of Management and in partnership with the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE), for an event focused on debunking ineffective corporate Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEl) practices. Dr. Sonia Kang, hosted a virtual seminar on her work around creating effective DEl practices, provided evidence-based examples from her research that work well, and focused on what employers can do to provide better workplaces for women. After the talk, there was a meaningful and thought provoking Q&A with the attendees and Dr. Kang, which was hosted by Sandro Perruzza, CEO of OSPE. Stay tuned for more details for the year INWED 2023 celebration.
